The online image of Gen-Z group 'The performers' is of great importance. Metropolitan girls in the age of 18-24 go out of their way to create and built on their cool, on-trend digital characters and therefore spend a great amount of time on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Their online activity and performance looks flawlessly casual from the outside, but behind the scene, are very time consuming and have a great negative impact on their mental health and body image.
Gen-Z is considered to be the most depressed generation: only 45% believe their mental health is good. Research found that the amount of young teengers suffering from depression and anxiety rose from 2013 onwards, due to teenagers’ increasing dependence on social media. The numbers make sense: YouTube was invented in 2004. Facebook in 2006. Instagram in 2010, and Snapchat in 2013. Today, any youth that spends 30 minutes online, is more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety. So, what will happen in upcoming Web 3.0's Metaverse, in which we will spend 12+ hours and having a cool character is key?
